Summer School «Quantum Machine Learning School 2024»

From July 26 to August 8, Lviv hosted the Summer School on Quantum Machine Learning, organized by the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU) and the innovative startup Haiqu, which was attended and successfully completed by a graduate student of the ONP “Computer Science” Heorhii Chyzhmak.

One of the key parts of the program was a hackathon where teams of participants solved complex scientific problems. Heorhii Chyzhmak 's team took up the study of chemical reactions by calculating the energy of the ground state of molecules (which is critical for understanding the thermodynamic stability of the reaction) using the Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) method. Their project aimed to investigate the reaction LiH + H2O↔LiOH + H2, which is crucial for the development of more efficient and reliable batteries using lithium as the main component. This study revealed which side of the reaction is more stable, as well as how the geometry of the molecules affects stability.

The work of Heorhii's team was recognized as one of the best, and they took third place among the teams. This emphasizes not only the high level of training of the participants, but also the relevance of the research, which can have a significant impact on the future development of energy technologies.

As a graduate student and at the same time working as a Data Scientist at the international company Tietoevry, Georgii actively combines practical skills with theoretical knowledge. His success at the school is a logical continuation of many years of work on research projects. Since his first year, Georgii has been actively engaged in scientific activities within the framework of the scientific student group “Monitoring of Complex Systems Based on Data Mining” under the guidance of Associate Professor V. Sidorenko.

The school has become an important platform for exchanging ideas and finding new approaches to solving complex scientific problems. Quantum Machine Learning is one of the most modern and promising fields of science, opening up endless opportunities for researchers and developers. Georgiy Chyzhmak's participation in this school was an important step in his scientific career, which allowed him not only to gain new knowledge but also to find new colleagues and like-minded people.
